Difficult To Go Green For Travel Buyers
Tiffany PhillipsMore than 66 percent of all travel buyers do not pay attention to environmental issues when comes the time book a trip, a flight or accommodation.
Of the total 1,400 respondents polled through the Business Travel & Meetings Show, nearly 20 percent stated that having “green” concerns was simply not a priority for them.
Furthermore, nearly 50% or the respondents claimed that the dubious financial climate in which we been experience as of late has dampen their will and enthusiasm in stepping forward and making environmentally sound choices pertaining to their travel options.
The Business Travel & Meetings Show survey arrives when global leaders gather in the Denmark’s capital to agree on a proposal which would promote the reduction of the world’s carbon emissions with the travel industry accused of being a major contributor of pollution.
BTMS event director David Chapple claimed that the business travel sector now must stop ignoring the importance of “green” transit options.
According to Chapple, many players in the travel industry are discovering that the move to green represents a real challenge—one which has been hindered by the economic downturn—despite an increasing pro-activity on the part of certain suppliers and buyers.
However, environmental issues are being put back as a top priority by governments and global legislation, Chapple said, adding that it was time the travel industry to play its part.
Some survey did revel some very positive responses: 21% of respondents claimed that they were planning to introduce an environmental strategy and half of the 44% who said they already have set up a green strategy intend to expend it.
BTMS, scheduled for February, is presenting a series of free educational sessions concerning key green issues including ‘measuring, reducing and compensating travel related carbon emissions’, ‘tuning into sustainability’, ‘reducing your carbon footprint’ and ‘the pros and cons of video conferencing.’
