The largest airline in the UK, easyJet, announced yesterday that they were planning to start service out of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, with five different routes as of April 2010
Senior representatives of the various interested groups–namely, Peel Airports, Doncaster Sheffield Airport management and tourism organisation Welcome to Yorkshire– were joined by easyJet representatives to announce the carrier’s new departure point.
For the event, the airline had flown in a new Airbus A319 aircraft to Doncaster Sheffield Airport.
Starting next April, easyJet revealed it will operate 21 weekly departures from the South Yorkshire air facility with a load factor of about 300,000 passengers during their first year of activity at the airport. For the small Doncaster Sheffield Airport, easyJet will be its largest no-frills airline.
Local residents will enjoy both sunshine destinations and city break opportunities with the services to Faro, Palma, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Prague.
Flights will scheduled for a April 19, 2010 launch, with ticket prices starting at £24.99 (taxes and charges inclued) and may already be booked online at www.easyjet.com.
Peel Airports CEO Mark Whitworth commented that the announcement is remarkable news for the region. He added that the carrier’s commitment to the area is a real sign of their confidence in the Airport.
Whitworth said that the news means that the Airport can confirm it will see double-digit growth during 2010.
EasyJet UK Regional General Manager Paul Simmons added that by beginning service at the Doncaster Sheffield Airport, the budget carrier may now tap into the Yorkshire catchment area including major urban centres such as Sheffield, Doncaster, Hull, Barnsley, Rotherham, Worksop and Wakefield.
Simmons also said that easyJet is looking to work on the inbound market, presenting Yorkshire as a worthwhile region for other Europeans.
