Looming Strike At Southern Railways

Southern Railways train drivers are promising to walk out the job on December 28 because of a dispute concerning Bank Holiday pay.

The train drivers’ union, the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (Aslef), claimed that its members are accusing Southern Railways of denying extra pay for staff scheduled to work on that day.

The union cautioned the public saying passengers who are planning to use one of Britain’s busiest rail networks will see huge disruptions.

The service provided by Southern Railways stretches from the capital to the South Coast, and also goes through parts of the South East.

Officials at Southern Railways have said that they urging the union to continue talks and to help reach a conclusion beneficial for both staff and passengers.

The union also said it was planning to call for industrial action on December 27 of next year as well as January 3, 2011 unless the row is resolved.

Southern claimed to be very disappointed about the strike plans.

The company added via a statement that Southern will work hard to provide negociation opporuniaties in a bid avoid all types of major service disruptions.

Other rail unions are going through the same process. The members of the Rail Maritime and Transport union are set for a ballot for industrial action stemming from the same issue.
