Northern Ireland Poised For White Christmas
Dave BondWeather forecasters say that Northern Ireland may experience a white Christmas for the first time in five years.
According to the Met Office, temperatures in Northern Ireland are expected to plummet dramatically near the end of the week and snow could follow.
A white Christmas means that at least 1mm of snow must have fallen on December 25 between 00:00 and 23:59 at the Met’s official weather station at the International Airport in Belfast.
For the first time since 2004, bookmakers have cut the odds for a Belfast white Christmas, with Betfred and Boylesports offering 3/1.
However, Paddy Power has replied with odds of 11/4.
A Paddy Power spokeswoman said that people could start to feel freezing winds and meteorologists have said that snow could be underway for this Friday.
She said that Paddy Power have now the odds for a white Christmas in both Belfast and Dublin at 11/4, while the British capital’s chances have been pined at 9/4.
The Met Office did say that despite freezing winds making their way from the Siberia to the UK with the promise of below-zero temperatures, it’s believed that Northern Ireland could very well escape the worst of the storm.
It’s been reported the UK may experience night-time temperatures as low as -2C at the beginning of the week combined with freezing cold easterly winds.
But the geographical position of Ireland in respect to Britain means the country could end up being protected from the worst of the bitterly cold conditions for the time being at the very least.
