More Americans Set To Travel During Christmas

An expected 2.7 million Michigan residents will travel a distance of 50 miles or more from their home during the Christmas season, claims a recent AAA travel survey. This figure represents a substantial increase over last year’s projected numbers of 2 million people.

AAA predicts that number to be around 87.7 million for the whole of the United States, an increase of 3.8 percent on last year.

The AAA poll revealed that the majority of Michigan residents who are planning to travel during Christmas holidays were expecting to do so by using a form of vehicle such as a car, truck or van to reach their destinations. This number represents 90% of the travelers while 5 % said they are will travel by air. The remaining 5 % said they would use the bus or train to reach their destination.

According to The Auto Club Group Travel vice president Claire Lockley, more Michiganians are expected to enjoy the long two-week Christmas holiday season with relatives and friends this year.

She said that small projected increase in air travel, both in the state of Michigan and across the US, is greatly appreciated by the travel industry since it had suffered such a hard blow as a result of the onset of the recession.

During the Christmas travel period, it’s been projected that Americans would spend for travel purposes about $1,009 for every household, with the largest portion of that budget covering the costs associated with transportation.

The projections made by the organisation AAA stem from research carried out by IHS Global Insight. AAA has been conducting holiday travel reports for more than twenty years. The AAA/HIS Global Insight 2009 holiday report is available at AAA.news.com
