Snow Storms Creating Havoc On British Roads
Stewart PerryTravellers were expecting to face some further major transit disruptions as heavy snow falls are set to affect much of the country, while England’s south-east and north-east are said to be the worst affected areas.
Severe warnings in respect to heavy snowfall in London as well as the East Midlands as been issued by the Met Office.
It’s predicted that as much as 20cm (8in) of snow could experienced in combination with gale-force drift causing winds in Surrey, Kent, Sussex, London and East Anglia.
As a result the onslaught of the falling snow, about 200 motorists were stuck tailbacks during the night on the M20 and M2 in Kent while flights got diverted.
Conditions were seen as their worst during last Friday’s morning rush hour traffic.
The weather has already caused transport problems in several parts of the country – particularly in south-east England.
On the A21, a lorry jackknifed near Tunbridge Wells, provoking mayhem which saw drivers being stuck in freezing conditions for three hours.
The main road linking Luton Airport to the M1, the A1081, was completely gridlocked in the first hours of Friday after experiencing several jackknifed vehicles.
An official with the Met Office explained the present weather conditions by saying there was a constant battle between mild air coming in from the west and the cold air seen at the moment over Britain.

It’s not recommended to travel in harsh weather condition unless the trip is essential.
Motorist should verify weather forecasts, both local and national, before driving out as well as packing a set of warm clothes, water, boots, food, a torch and spade.
Drivers should venture out in their cars with care even if roads have been treated with salt and keep their distance from other vehicles, remembering that icy conditions make breaking ten times longer.
