UK Travel Still in Chaos Due to Snow
Tiffany PhillipsJust before Christmas it seems as if the UK is in complete travel chaos. During any other time of the year, people may just say forget it and stay at home. However, since it’s that special time of the season, people are doing everything and anything to get to their holiday destinations in time for the holidays. This could prove to be bad since most of the temperatures around the UK are even lower than that of Alaska.
Tons of flights at airports all over the UK have been canceled. There also seems to be a lot of road and train mayhem thanks to snow and ice. At Heathrow Airport, where temperatured dipped below -5.3°C, British Airways had to cancel fights because of fog. On top of this, EasyJet was forced to cancel at least 20 flights so far to and from the South East, including eight at Gatwick, ten at Stansted and another two at Luton. This total did finally reach 36 flights as services to Bristol, Liverpool and Glasgow were later canceled as well.
One message on the easyJet website said that they sincerely apologize for this disruption. However, due to the current weather conditions, they have had to cancel some flights. Although many passengers are upset about this, experts quickly point out that weather conditions are beyond the airline’s control.
Of course, if people think that they can escape this weather by taking a train, they should think again. There were also around 30 cancellations on Southern train services between London and the south coast just yesterday.
Due to the very extreme weather conditions, eight people have already died so far. This includes two women who were killed when their coach overturned on icy roads in Cornwall. In Tulloch, Aberdeenshire, the coldest place in the UK, temperatures finally dropped all the way down to -16°C. Hapshire Village of Odiham was able to record England’s lowest temperature of -9.6°C.
