154 passengers escape horrific American Airlines crash
Sharon MillerThe 154 passengers miraculous escaped any serious outcome as the American Airlines Boeing 737 aircraft they were on board overran the runway at Jamaica’s Kingston international airport, and broke in two pieces when it attempted to land.
The US commercial carrier released a statement yesterday saying that its flight American Airlines 331 which had left Miami International Airport en route for Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport in Jamaica overran the runway as it attempted to land.
The statement said that none of the 154 people on board, including 148 passengers and the 6 members of the crew, had sustained any serious injury.
The Jamaican media said that the aircraft had broken in two as it crashed on landing around 10:20pm last night.
Forty injured people, all rushed to medical centres after the crash, had been reported by the Jamaica Observer newspaper.
The carrier was in direct contact with National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration officials, and was cooperating with the authorities, The American Airlines statement said.
But no comment was made about the possible cause of the accident.
Passengers told reporters that the plane had met with pouring rain as it arrived from Miami when the crash happened.
Shaken American Airlines flight 331 passenger Naomi Palmer said the aircraft had broken right in front of her. She revealed that she had suffered slight injuries which were causing some pain as she was being supported by a friend immediately outside the arrival section of the airport.
Jamaican information minister Daryl Vaz said that all injured people had been brought to Kingston Public Hospital and that there had been no fatalities.
