Irukandji jellyfish stings “Best Job in the World” winner Ben Southall
Stewart PerryThe winner of Best Job in the World contest, Ben Southall, has experienced a sting by one the most venomous creators on the planet, the irukandji jellyfish.
It’s been reported that Southall had ignored the advice given to him by officials at Tourism Queensland who strongly recommended wearing a specially designed stinger suit.
Stung on his elbow, Southall suffered the injury on Sunday as he was jet-skiing off the destination to which he’s the caretaker, Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays.
Southall still has a week to go before the end of his $150,000 Best Job in the World.
A former British charity worker, Southall Tweeted yesterday and revealed his painful ordeal, after the potentially lethal encounter with the jellyfish sting. He admitted having been a bit careless and promised to use a stinger suit for all further water adventures.
A representative at Tourism Queensland said Mr Southall had believed unnecessary to adorn the protective clothing since he was on a jetski, although the group always recommends to anyone on the ocean north of Agnes Waters to wear a stinger suit during this period of the year.
According to the TQ spokeswoman, the 34-year-old got immediate medical attention after the minor sting.
He claimed to have suffered from headaches and nausea although he is now feeling much better.
Dr Lisa-Ann Gershwin, a stinger expert, said irukandji season peaks sometimes between Christmas and New Year.
She said the region had seen the usual number of about 10 irukandji stings during the season.
