Broadmoor Psychiatric Hospital to be Turned into UK Hotel
Abi BrayIt seems that new plans to turn the Broadmoor psychiatric hospital into a hotel have just recently surfaced. As of right now, this hospital is home to some of the UK’s most dangerous criminals including the Yorkshire Ripper.
The inmate rooms would be turned into apartments or hotel bedrooms, depending on what plan gets picked up. The money raised would help to finance a new psychiatric hospital which will cost around £288 million. Some of the current inmates at the 53 acre hospital in Crowthorne Berkshire include Peter Sutcliffe, the Yorkshire Ripper; Steve Wright, the Suffolk Strangler; and Rober Napper, who was Rachel Nickell’s murderer.
A spokesperson for the West London Mental Health NHS Trust said that they have plans to build a new hospital alongside the existing Broadmoor site. The plans are currently with the Department of Health. The buildings and land in the current hospital complex, which were no longer needed by the NHS, will be sold. A possible buyer might wish to adapt the buildings for a number of uses, which does include a hotel.
The plans were drawn up in 2003 but are still awaiting final approval. The provisional completion date of 2016 might also get pushed back to 2023 because of the credit crunch. However, as of now, no one is sure just yet.
Concerns have been raised about the standards of care at Broadmoor for about 20 years now. Hospital executives are under increasing pressure to improve the facilities after the suicides of three patients in 18 months. This included the Freddy Krueger killer, Danny Gonzalez.
