The budget hotel chain Travelodge has announced plans to expand its presence in Britain with the creation of 26 new hotels and 500 new jobs.

Property of Dubai International Capital, the accommodation provider claimed that the £115 million expansion plans would bring in an additional 2,000 rooms to the market.

The 26 new hotels will bring Travelodge’s UK total to more than 400 hotels with more than 30,000 rooms.

The group will introduce three new hotels in Edinburgh and two in London.

The No 2 player in the UK budget hotel market behind Whitbread’s Premier Inn chain and accounting for a 33percent of the sector, Travelodge said that all the future sites were planned to be built in city centres, in town or in seaside locations, including Morecambe and Colwyn Bay.

Travelodge chief executive Grant Hearn said that despite a very competitive market, the group, once part of the Forte empire, has opted to initiate a growth mode in the UK while the recession is still here as well as for years to come.

Due to the economic down turn, customers are choosing more affordable but quality accommodations, Mr Hearn said.

He claimed that the popularity of “staycations” as well as the occurrence of businesses wanting to reduce their travel budgets have generated a rise of the demand for budget hotel accommodation in the UK during the past year.
