UK student visa holders coming under immigration scrutiny

British Immigration officials posted at airports in the United Kingdom will be provided with greater authority which allow them to refuse entry to foreigners attempting to enter the country on UK student visas and who appear suspect.

The decision comes after government reports which stipulated that immigration employees in the United Kingdom were finding it difficult to prevent fraudulent immigrants from entering the country thanks to student visas granted with the used of forged documents or to attend a false educational institution.

Rules concerning UK immigration staff in the past had left them powerless to stop these suspect student visa holders from entering the country based on the suspicions of the employees alone.

The result was a mounting backlog of UK student visas applications all over the globe, of which several were illegal.

Phil Woolas, the UK immigration minister, has thus given immigration officials at border agencies the authority to look at bank accounts of prospective students at investigations at airports carried out on-the-spot. One of the important requirements for any foreign student entering the United Kingdom to study is to be able to prove that they have sufficient funds to support themselves while they are attending school.

The UK immigration department is also separately reviewing the student visa system in its entirety following concerns raised by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who demanded that the current UK points-based system be redrawn.
