Aer Lingus and Aer Arann partner-up
Tiffany PhillipsA new deal between Irish passenger airlines Aer Lingus and Aer Arann will help reinstate the route between Durham Tees Valley Airport and Dublin.
The airlines have announced that they are scheduling flight operations at a frequency of six round trips per week from Tees Valley, thus filling in the void left by the departure of budget carrier Ryanair which was providing the Dublin service cancelled last March.
The news was announced at the Irish Stock Exchange earlier.
The low cost airline used to carry as many as 60,000 passengers a year when it was operating at its height and was also an important generator of footfall for DTVA.
The name Aer Lingus Regional will be used to brand the new franchise services and the3 flights will be operated with an Aer Arann ATR 72-500 aircraft and crew.
The complete agreement between Aer Lingus and Aer Arann will consist of a total of 12 routes from the two largest cities in the country, Dublin and Cork. The flights will be marketed and sold via www.aerlingus.com.
Full operational and commercial responsibility will be assumed by Aer Arann for the services and in return, Irish flagship carrier Aer Lingus will receive a franchise fee for the use of its branding which has a broader appeal.
Aer Lingus chief executive Christoph Mueller said that the new deal will significantly improve the presence of the airline in the Ireland-UK market and is welcomed news for share holders.
Aer Lingus also revealed earlier this week that it was repositioning itself and as adopting the moniker ”civilized airline”. The carrier said it was looking to present itself has a middle ground between typical low cost carriers such as Ryanair and full service airlines such as British Airways.
