TripAdvisor Angers UK Hotel Industry
Helen YoungJust recently TripAdvisor announced its list of the Dirtiest Hotels in the United States. This new list has caused a big uproar among hospitality leaders in the UK.
An industry, which is an ocean away, has now come out and expressed its concerns about TripAdvisor and sites that are similar to it. These hospitality leaders go on to say that these sites that rely on anonymous reviews yield way too much power. Although these concerns have been present for quite some time, this latest list has made the topic even bigger.
The CEO of the British Hospitality Association, Bob Cotton, said that hotels across Europe are lobbying the EU Commission to rewrite the rules governing website reviews. The goal of these rules would be to make sure that these reviews are, of course, legit and not written by rivals. Mr Cotton went on to say that these websites have a responsibility to find out that the person has actually stayed at the hotel or dined at the restaurant that they are reviewing. He said that he has been having discussions in Brussels on behalf of the industry so that some sort of common sense can prevail.
Cotton also said that it’s impossible to ban these online comments. This would be like trying to take back the making of the atomic bomb. However, there are ways to make these reviews more truthful. He said that he was currently aware of some cases where hotel owners had been double crossed by a competitor who wrote a series of disparaging comments about a rival hotel. This is the kind of thing that the hotel industry wants to stop.
