Antigua Taken Off Star Clippers Cruise Route Due to Rising Crime

It now seems that a leading cruise line, Star Clippers, has just recently called for the cancellation of all cruise routes to Antigua following the murder on the island of one of its passengers just last month. This move by Star Clippers came just 10 days after the body of a 30-year-old American woman was discovered near Pigeon Point Beach. This is an area that has been very popular among tourists.

The woman, Nina Nilssen, age 30, was from San Francisco. She had wandered away from a nearby barbecue during an onshore break. A 24-year-old man has already been arrested and charged with her murder. The Star Clippers cruises that were due to go to Antigua will now stop at Nevis. The company has yet to decide whether it will resume calls to the island next winter or not.

Carnival Cruise Lines removed Antigua from its Caribbean itineraries back in January after several of its passengers were involved in an altercation with local police. Other cruise lines that are no longer serving Antigua include Celebrity Cruises, Sliversea, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Princess Cruises.

The Foreign Office has warned prospective visitors that there has been an increase in crime in the area lately. This includes crimes that involve guns. The website for the Foreign Office went on to say that travelers should take precautions and be vigilant at all times. Avoid isolated areas, including beaches after dark.

In some other incidents in Antigua, an Australian holidaymaker was shot during an attempted robbery last January. There was also a British couple that was murdered at Cocos Hotel while on their honeymoon back in July of 2008.
