German Travelers Spend the Most on Holiday Breaks

Dave Bond

Well it appears that no group of people like to travel more than Germans do, and when Germans travel, they apparently do it in style. According to new reports, Germany is the country that spent the most money on travel products last year. In fact, they coughed up $90 billion total.

The second most traveling bunch of people are Americans, who spent, as a nation, $79.9 billion. This is a number that is 4.4 percent higher than figures saw in 2008. Despite the increase in the United States, the total number of money spent on travel products does not even come close to the billions spent by Germans.

Barry Smith, the Skyscanner Co-Founder and Business Director, said that it will be very interesting to see how tourist spending changes since the big downturn. So far, the latest figures show that only the Japanese spent less on international tourism than the previous year. Meanwhile, it appears to be Germans who remain the world’s biggest spending tourists. There would have to be a big change for any country to take over the number one spot.

If people look at the top three spenders, Germany, the United States and the UK, they are billions of dollars ahead of everyone else as far as overseas spending goes. Germany spent $90 billion, the United States spent $79.7 billion and the UK spent $68.5 billion. The closest country to the UK after that was France, and they only spent $43.1 billion.

From there it just continues to go down hill. China came in 5th with spending $36.2 billion last year, and Italy came in 6th by spending $30.8 billion in travel. The Netherlands, which just made the top ten spent only $21.7 billion.
