British Airways Strike Delayed As Talks Continue

Robert Jones

It seems that, recently, the Unite union has declined to set a date for the strike action for British Airways. This is due to the fact that the airline has chosen to go ahead with strike talks. The British Airlines Stewards and Stewardesses Association, which is a Unite union branch, met at Kempton Park race course near Heathrow airport. Here hundreds of cabin crew were informed a deal may now be possible.

Already, some 15,000 cabin crew voted in favor of industrial action just early last week. They voted for industrial action over concerns on contract conditions. However, British Airways denies that these modest changes are illegal. This was a view that has already been supported by the High Court in London.

The British Airlines Stewards and Stewardesses Association’s plan to keep talking may now give British Airways and the unions another shot at reaching an agreement. However, some proposed strike dates have already been put through for authorization just in case these negotiations end without an agreement.

British Airways just recently said in a statement, they are not involved in the TUC process, and they really want to resolve this issue. Unite union has already ruled out a possible strike over the Easter period. However, other possible days are still being considered.

Cabin Crew had originally planned for this strike to take place during Christmas. It was going to be a 12 day strike; however, this action had to be called off at the last minute, because British Airways took it before the High Court. The court ruled that the ballot was not legal since people who no longer worked for British Airways voted in the strike.
