Europe Launches First Alcohol Free Holiday Resort
Abi BrayIt now seems that Portugal is home to Europe’s very first alcohol free holiday resort. This getaway spot is aimed at recovering addicts. Renovatio, the company behind the project, which is being calling Sober Holidays, has a goal to provide visitors with a safe and supportive environment that still allows them to have fun.
The property that is being used is located in the Algarve and is a restored 19th century villa. The resort is close to Fargo airport and will starting taking guests as of this coming April. The resort offers a wide range of activities for guests to take part in. In fact, guests can take part in mountain hiking and biking, bird watching, tennis or even play on the 14 golf courses in the surrounding countryside.
Renovatio is not affiliated with any other organizations. Guests will be offered access to three weekly Alcoholics Anonymous meetings if they wish. They will also have the choice to attend Weekly Gamblers Anonymous meetings and twice weekly Narcotics Anonymous meetings. All of these meetings will take place locally.
A member of AA, who has asked not to be named, said that for people in the early stage of recovery from drugs and alcohol addiction, this new resort is a great idea. It is difficult to find an environment where people are surrounded by like-minded people and not exposed to their former lifestyle.
The property itself is owned and operated by Andrew O’Loughlin, who is a recovering alcoholic himself. He has been sober for four years now and wishes to help others do the same. Mr O’Loughlin went on to say that on any conventional holiday, alcohol is everywhere. For anyone that is trying to stop drinking, it’s very hard to pass it all up. Many recovering alcoholics simply do not go on holidays because of this fact. However, this new resort gives these people a chance to take holidays as well.
