Air Berlin Pilots Next to Strike
Tiffany PhillipsWell it seems like the list of airlines that are having to deal with a strike threat just keeps on growing. Now, Air Berlin pilots are all set to take a strike at short notice in protest against unfair working conditions.
Members of Vereinigung Cockpit, the same union that was involved in the very short lived Lufthansa strike, had its members vote just last week. Apparently the members voted in favor of industrial action following months of negotiations. Vereinigung Cockpit went on to say in a statement earlier this week that the three-hour warning strike will take place in the coming days. However, it is not clear which day it will be exactly.
Apparently this is a strike that can be called within a couple hours of warning. It is an attempt to take Air Berlin and its subsidiary LTU by surprise. Because of this short notice strategy, Vereingung Cockpit could not give any indication as to how many flights will be affected by the strike. Really it will all come down to how many pilots are on duty at the time of the action.
However, the union did say that the strike could be called off in the last few minutes, but it would all really be up to Air Berlin at that point. Air Berlin’s director of corporate communications, Hans Christoph Noack, said that negotiations were still ongoing and was confident that the strike could be averted. Noack continued that he would not predict the extent of disruptions to any services. He did add that the rest of Air Berlin’s workforce was prepared to deal with any resulting delays.
