British Airways Backed by 6,000 Volunteers
Robert JonesBritish Airways may not be as scared of the strike threat as some may think. In fact, British Airways says that it has 6,000 volunteers on standby to assist at airports and on aircraft if cabin crew members of Unite union choose to go ahead with the strike threat. Some say that this could be the reason why the union is working hard to get talks taken care of so a strike action does not have to take place.
In an internal letter to the staff at British Airways, chief executive Willie Walsh said that 1,000 employees where ready to stand in as flight attendants in the event of a strike. Union members have been infuriated by colleagues’ decisions to cross the picket line. However, it seems that sympathy shown by staff and by the general public towards the striking cabin crew has been pretty minimal.
In fact, many experts in the airline industry say that a majority of British Airways staff think that the cabin crew members are acting, not only selfishly, but they are not considering the outcome of their actions. British Airways has said time and time again that these cuts and changes have to be made. If they are not, then there may not be any airline to work for anyway. Thus, it would seem that the striking members are not thinking about the company, and they are not thinking about fellow workers who would also be out of a job if the airline goes under.
It is also said that British Airways cabin crew enjoy market leading salaries and significant travel perks. Thus, many people feel they are being a bit to greedy at a time when the airline is struggling to stay alive.
