New Anti-Jargon Campaign Launched by Holiday Inn
Sharon MillerHoliday Inn is now urging its business guests to cut back on corporate jargon. This news came after a survey revealed that 39 percent of people lose focus in meetings after about 20 minutes. The hotel group surveyed 1000 UK workers in April. It found that 21 percent of them blamed lack of concentration in meetings on jargon overload.
Just under half of the people that took the survey, 47 percent agreed that business jargon annoys them. Another 42 percent of them said that they find it hard to follow what is being said in the meeting. One in two respondents even said that they think their colleagues only use business jargon to appear more intelligent.
Holiday Inn has now proposed a number of alternatives to the worst offending phrases. According to the survey, some of the most annoying phrases include “touch base,” “blue sky,” and “outside the box.” These phrases could be changed to (in the same order) make contact, limitless thinking, and think differently.
Florence Eavis from Holiday Inn said that they believe that getting rid of pointless jargon will help people concentrate longer in meetings. Thus, they are asking their guests to simply speak plain English. Holiday Inn is also offering more tips at their website.
Most experts agree that Holiday Inn is doing this anti-jargon campaign as a why to bring in more business customers, which is their main source of income. This campaign shows that Holiday Inn still cares about business travelers, and they are there to help. Either way, most agree that they are good tips. After all, if people have to sit through another meeting where someone says think outside the box, most people are going top scream.
