The Icelandic Horse is patient, adaptable, uncomplicated and sometimes very spirited. It has a friendly personality and a special affinity towards people. Well trained it is an excellent family horse. Icelandics are 13 - 14 hands tall and are ponies by North American standards, they are referred to as horses in Europe. They weigh 800 - 1000 pounds and are bred to carry adults. Icelandic Horses are slow to mature. They should not be ridden until the age of 4 years. Their period of greatest strength is from 8 to 18 years and it is not unusual to ride them until the age of 30. In a herd of Icelandic Horses you can find a large variety of colours, besides chestnut, bay, black and grey, there are yellow, red and blue duns, pinto and a wide variety of other shades. Icelandics have five natural gaits, walk, trot, canter, pace and tolt. The tolt made these horses so famous worldwide. One hears the tolt as a four-beat staccato and sees the rider sits perfectly still in the saddle, without the tossing movement of the trot.
