The Sarah McLellan Residence (the official name of the house) was designated an Alberta Historic Resource in the year 2000 and an Edmonton Municipal Historic Resource in August 2001. It was built on land purchased from Laurent Garneau, the original Metis settler whose farm on the southern bank of the Saskatchewan River included the lots on which the house was built. Sarah McLellan purchased the property in 1907 and had the house built in 1913 at a cost of $4500. Nurses working at the military hospital, which sat on the space now occupied by the University of Alberta Hospital, used the house as a nurse's residence from 1916 to 1922. From then till now it has been owned by several families and was used as a family residence, rooming house and student residence. Despite its multiple uses the house itself was never dramatically altered. No walls or original features, other than some gingerbread were ever removed. All of the original woodwork, despite many layers of paint remained essentially undisturbed with all of the original hardware also remaining in use. In fact the only material changes over the years was the addition of partition walls for the rooming house utilization, increased plumbing capacity, electrical alterations and enhancements, telephone and cable installations and repeated modifications to the heating system and the rebuilding of the roof. The preserved original woodwork includes clear fir paneling in the dining room, all of the original 5-panel doors, all other door and window trim and all of the original sash windows.
