CARCASSONNE There are a number of restaurants within a few minutes walk as well as a boulangerie, general stores and various other shops. As Carcassonne offers shops, markets, theatres and free transport during holiday periods it is not necessary to use a car. However, to explore the many attractions of the area in general you may wish to have a car. Car hire is available in the town and from the airport. Carcassonne is a perfect base to explore this historical area as well as easy access to the coast for the many beaches and the Pyrenees/Ariege area for skiing and walking. There are the Cathar castles, Montagne Noir, Minervois, Corbieres, Toulouse, Beziers, Montpelier, Perpignan, Narbonne and the beach resorts. The theatres in Carcassonne cater for all tastes providing plays of comedy to drama and classical music to jazz. A festival is held in Carcassonne and surrounding villages during the months of July and August. Many of the festivities take place out of doors for example fireworks for the 14 July (Bastide Day) celebrations. In addition, towns and villages in the surrounding area have many fetes and festivals and visitors are always made welcome. Apart from the wonderful medieval city of Carcassonne (La Cit頩s a World Heritage Site), and the Bastide St Louis, both with many restaurants and shopping facilities, there is the Lac de la Cavay貥 10 minutes away for swimming, boating, sailing and windsurfing, as well as golf available at Carcassonne and Castelnaudary. To the north there is Toulouse and Castelnaudary; to the west the Pyrenees and Ariege Department for skiing and walking; to the east, the Montagne Noir, Minervois, Beziers, Pezanas, Montpellier and to the south there is Narbonne and the many beach resorts such as St Cyprien Plage, Gruissan Plage, Sete, Cap d'Agde and Perpignan and Spain. For wine connoisseurs, the whole surrounding area is a challenge. How many chateau and vineyards can you visit in one day or one week? Follow 'La route des vins' in the Minervois, the vineyards of the Corbieres and Cabardes, and then taste the sparkling champagne style wine of Limoux. You need to use your own car if you wish to purchase wine from the caves (the baggage limit on airlines makes it prohibitive). They are very reasonably priced and excellent value for money.
