Our newly renovated traditional Maine fisherman's cottage is located on a thin finger of land that juts out in to the north Atlantic thirty miles north of the Bar Harbor/Acadia/Ellsworth area. Thus, we are centrally located for your trip to Acadia/Downeast Maine and maritime Canada. Our shore cottage sits on 1 3/4 acres with 350' of deep water shore frontage with open views of Petit Manan Island lighthouse, Bois Bubert Island, Pigeon Hill Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. 25' of continuous windows grace the front of our cottage permitting 180 degree views of the shore and the bay. Our cottage comfortably accommodates 2 - 6 persons in two bedrooms (master bedroom with double bed and upstairs bedroom with two twin beds) and a queen size pull-out sleeper in the Great Room. Full bath with contemporary tub-shower combination has direct access from master bedroom and secondary access from kitchen. Full kitchen includes full size range with oven, full size refrigerator with ice maker, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, coffee grinder, and all the cooking utensils, dishware, and silverware you need to enjoy your stay at the Maine shore. Our cottage is easily accessible from U.S. Route 1 (5.1 miles) but sits near the end of a dead-end two lane blacktop road. The area is rural/ residential with a quiet, tranquil feel. Petit Manan National Wildlife Refuge, widely known for birding, is located 1/2 mile from our cottage at the end of our dead-end blacktop road. Composed of 43 offshore islands (including Petit Manan Island and 2/3 of Bois Bubert Island) and 3 shore parcels constituting 7,000 acres, the Refuge is home to 325 bird species -- more than any of the other 540 U.S. National Wildlife Refuges. 310 of those species have been identified in the vicinity of Petit Manan Island/Petit Manan Point including artic, common, and roseate terns; puffins; murres; razorbills; black guillemots; cormorants; eiders; buffleheads; and hundreds of species of migratory shorebirds (whimbrels; dowitchers; lesser and greater yellow legs; killdeers; sanderlings; semi-palmated plovers; many others). The Refuge has several well marked hiking trails leading to the shore at Pigeon Hill Bay and Dyer Bay and 60 acres of blueberry barrens with hand picking permitted in season. In addition to the hundreds of species of shore birds at the Refuge, guests at the cottage can regularly see bald eagles, loons, great blue herons, seals, porpoise, and occasional black bear and moose. The local bald eagle population has increased to the point over the last decade where eagles routinely fly over the cottage, perch in tall spruce trees within 200' of our cottage, and bathe in our creek where it wanders through the saltwater meadow near our shore. The loons fish just offshore and call to each other (especially in spring and fall) and the herons stand in the shallows at low tide on our beach and up and down the road. Petit Manan is an enchanted place you will wish to return to year after year. Whale watching and puffin tours (there is a small band of nesting puffins and roseate terns on Petit Manan Island) are available nearby.
