The Kinja Farmhouse Kenya

Farmhouse in Mombassa, Kenya

Property Details of Mombassa Farmhouse

The Kinja Farmhouse is our "up-country" home and base. Located on the shores of Oloidian Lake adjoining Lake Naivasha and situated between two private game sanctuaries, the house is a peaceful retreat from which Naivasha and the surrounding areas can be explored. It also make a superb base for a more relaxed up-country safari. The house has two large en-suite bedrooms. Guests share the large sitting room with log fire and verandah overlooking the lake. The house staff will take care of all your requirements during your stay. The 10 acres of bush and gardens that run from the house to the lakeshore are often visited by the local wildlife. Hippo and zebra are seen most nights and on rare occasions, Colobus Monkeys, leopard, buffalo and hyaena are spotted. Recently lion have returned to this part of the Rift Valley and may be heard roaring during the night. The lake in front of the house is visited by large numbers of Lesser and Greater Flamingo.

Local Area Details

At 1890m, Lake Naivasha is the Rift Valley's highest lake. Lying at the foot of the eastern wall of the valley, 120km northwest of Nairobi, the lake is one of Kenya's key conservation sites. With an incredible variety of flora and fauna, including over 300 species of birds, the area is a naturalist's dream. The area offers plenty to see and do including:

Mt Longonot (The Mountain of Valleys)

Mt Longonot stands at 2777m and cuts a striking feature on the landscape with its volcanic cone and jagged peaks. Keen walkers should not miss the opportunity to climb the dormant volcano's crater rim for the breathtaking view into the caldera.

Crater Lake Game Sanctuary

To the immediate west of Lake Naivasha is the haunting Crater Lake - a small lake deep-set in one of the many local craters. The birdlife is spectacular, the dominant species being the Lesser and Greater Flamingo and the area offers wonderful walking country with plains game and Colobus Monkey commonly seen. Kinja Farm House is only 3 kilometers from Crater Lake.

Hell's Gate National Park

Once an overflow channel for a much larger Lake Naivasha, the Hells Gate gorge is the most dramatic feature of this beautiful park. The cliffs of the gorge reach almost 1000ft high and provide homes for numerous birds of prey as well as a playground for rock climbers.

Hells Gate National Park is one of very few parks in Kenya that permits walking. The park has a plethora of wildlife and you may easily encounter herds of giraffe, zebra, buffalo and gazelle whilst 'on foot'. The park is also home to one of the world's largest geothermal power generating units contributing some 18 per cent of Kenya's electricity supply.
