About Scenery/Beauty Spots
ASILAH AND THE NORTH COAST The North Atlantic coast, which stretches from Tangier down to Casablanca, has hundreds of miles of beaches, excellent surfing and popular seaside resorts, such as Moulay Bousselham, Larache or Asilah. At one time or another, the Romans, the Spanish and the Portuguese all occupied the fishing town of Asilah, 40 km south of Tangier. Today, distinctly Mediterranean, laid back, and with a lovely beach, it is one of the most elegant of the old Portuguese Atlantic ports along this coast and a favorite summer destination. Bastions, towers and imposing ramparts offer the setting for delightful seaside walks. Asilah’s restaurants are famous for their fried fish dishes. In August, the town becomes one enormous art gallery when Asilah holds its annual culture festival. Artists exhibit their work in the delightful setting of the Pasha Raïssouni palace, in the streets, or even by painting on the walls of the town.
THE RIF MOUNTAINS AND MED COAST Inland from the Mediterranean coast of Morocco is the Rif - a land of ruggedly beautiful mountains and gorges. There are magnificent views from the imposing peaks across gorges and valleys to large tracts of cedar and fir forests populated by Barbary apes. Stretching from Tangier to Saidia in the East, the Mediterranean coast delights visitors with its golden sand beaches, its coves and cliffs. Southeast of Tangier, there is a string of small seaside resorts such as Cabo Negro, Restinga-Smir, M’Diq and Martil. Further east are the quiet Mediterranean resorts of Al-Hoceima and Saidia. The beautiful blue and whitewashed chefchaouen, 40 miles (60km) south of Tetouan, is set against the backdrop of the mountains, high up in the Rif. It is a holy city, with some 20 mosques and sanctuaries. Its little cobbled streets meander from one shady square to another. Chefchaouen is an ideal base for trekking in the wild and spectacular Rif mountains.
TANGIER At the crossroads of Africa and Europe, the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, Tangier has an individual character. It is one of the oldest cities in Morocco. The Phoenicians and Carthaginians established trading posts here. The Romans made it a capital city. It was occupied by the Arabs and invaded by Vandals and Visigoths. Before the Spanish, the Portuguese controlled the town. In the early part of the 20th century, Tangier was an international city whose tax-free status and cosmopolitan image attracted European and American artists and writers. Although it has lost a little of its glamorous image, it is still a bustling city with an air of mystery surrounding it. For most visitors that arrive in Morocco by sea, it is their first point of contact with the country. The owner has a very comprehensive and attractive web site photo album which will enable you to take a virtual tour of the property by photograph. Email the contact for the web address
