Chateau apartment on 40 acre estate near Paris France

Prices from €30 per Night
1/2 hour from Paris, this fully renovated studio apartment in a beautiful 1864 chateau has authentic antique features--high ceilings, hand-made cabinet doors, beautiful proportions, antique furniture, oak floors, chateau antiquities--with modern comforts--modern kitchen and bath, tennis court, heated swimming pool. The 16-hectare grounds include old stone work, antique wrought-iron gates, plane-tree allee, chestnut allee, huge ancient trees, ponds, herb rose fruit gardens, espaliered fruit trees (enjoy the fresh fruit), forest, glass house, cobbled courtyards, petit salon, stone cellars--all for guests to enjoy. The studio is on the 2nd floor. The chateau is never crowded -- there are only a few apartments, rarely all occupied. Maintained into the 1990s by its noble family, this 17th-century estate is genuine, beautifully cared for, and has intact grounds within ancient walls. The "new" chateau was built in 1864, while the estate, visited by Tour de France winners, Mme. Sevigne, and royalty, was established in the 17th century. Stables, orangerie, and other 17th-century outbuildings are still in use. Guests are invited to enjoy the shared estate--outdoor furniture and terraces and lawns; ornamental ponds and fountains; gardens, orchards, moats, greenhouse (and heated swimming pool, tennis court); in the ecurie: pigeon cote, oubliettee; and in the chateau: entry hall, stone stairway, petit salon with floor-to-ceiling windows and fireplace, cellars (with the old kitchen, still fully equipped and working, and with a fireplace; an extra toilet; shared washer and dryer; crannies to explore)--the estate is a joy and a marvel, and guests are welcome to treat it as their own. The studio is fully renovated, heated, furnished with antiques and modern furniture, and very comfortable, with a ceramic tile bathroom (with toilet, sink, and shower); tiled kitchenette with refrigerator, oven, microwave/convection oven, hot plate; very comfortable IKEA double-bed sofa with birch slats and high-end mattress that's so comfortable I replaced my bed at home with one just like it; single aerobed and foam hassock-bed (listed as "cots") so guests can sleep separately or share the double bed; two wicker chairs; antique French-oak dining table & 4 chairs; kitchen, bed, and bath linens; and everything you need for cooking and dining except the food. The caretaker offers meal delivery, taxi service, and bike rental for a fee, and kind, generous help and orientation. Our caretaker family includes a former policeman, & provides 24-hour security--though the chateau is in the country and nothing ever happens.

The rest of the year, the studio would have no guests, so you could leave your things there safely and just treat it as your own. Payment by bank transfer, personal check, or money order is ideal. If you pay for conversion to dollars or euros, any currency is fine. A deposit of €200 will hold the studio for you. The caretaker will collect a €200 damages deposit and refund it when you leave. We've never kept a damages deposit, so it's nothing to worry about. There is a cleaning charge of €35 when you leave, which we ask for in euros so the caretaker can use it. Guests pay for telephone service they use (Most use their mobile), but we pay for electricity. The chateau is centrally heated and the apartment is heated by electricity. If the electricity costs more than 125% of usual, we ask guests to pay the excess. This is to encourage guests not to waste energy, as when someone has the heat on and the windows open. We're glad to help find rental cars (about $300/week at Charles de Gaulle Airport rather than the usual $1000+/week) and inexpensive flights. We provide bed, bath, and kitchen linens, pillows, mattress cover, comforter; pots, pans, coffeemaker, utensils, microwave that also browns; tableware--just unlock the door and make yourself at home. We're happy to try to adapt to your preferences.

About Weather/Climate/Temperature

The climate at the chateau is milder than the mid-Atlantic USA weather I'm used to. In January, it's cold but not uncomfortable. In April you can go outside in indoor clothes.

About Beaches

We're minutes from the Marne River, where there are watersports and lovely little restaurants on the banks, costing from 12 euros for a 3-course dinner with wine.
