About Walking
Lovely local walks, literally right on your doorstep along the Rumbling Bridge Gorge of the River Devon, down to Muckhart Mill and into the Ochils. Easy climbs up Seamab Hill and over Dollar. The Ochils are a ridge of hills above a south-facing escarpment. The highest peak in the Ochils is Ben Cleuch which is 2,363 feet (721 metres) and offers a challenge to any hillwalker intending to reach its summit. There are several other hills including King's Seat Hill (648 metres) above Castle Campbell which perches between the Glens of Care and Sorrow looking out over the plain below as far as the River Forth.
About History
Rumbling Bridge is a small village that takes its name from the double bridge that spans the River Devon Gorge. The lower bridge dates from 1700 with the upper bridge being built over it in the 1800s. The drop down to the gorge is about 120 feet - depending on the water level, which varies dramatically. Craigard House was built in 1905 by Neil McNamara the local hotelkeeper as one of a pair of houses designed to entertain the Edwardian gentry who liked to walk in the Ochils and surrounding area, hunt, shoot and fish. The nearest castle is Loch Leven in the centre of the loch where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned for many years.
