300 year old cottage for 6 plus swimming pool France

Prices from £400 per Week
About La Rosiere Stone built, originally a Water Mill, the property dates back about 200 years having been a farm, a trout hatchery, a Parisian holiday retreat and the home of a local businessman. None of the water mill features remain but the cottage was the original mill. Although when purchased the property was in a good state of repair, (by French standards), we embarked on a five year renovation programme. Initially this was to make our own accommodation more comfortable, but then we concentrated on starting our holiday letting business which involved the complete renovation of the cottage, and the installation of a swimming pool all of this was completed June 1995. The cottage is completely self-contained with its own private courtyard, fenced garden with a stream meandering at the front. Although part of the commune of Les Eyzies, La Rosiere is set in a quiet valley, called Combe de la Faye (valley of the fairies) and is surrounded by wooded hillsides with no immediate neighbours or passing traffic, but is still within close proximity for shopping, sightseeing, restaurants and many other activities. The property has twenty?one acres of land, and is surrounded by hundreds of acres of hillsides and valley's through which you can walk with freedom. This part of France has a very good record as far as crime is concerned, (almost non existent) and apart from the obvious dangers of cliffs, rivers and lakes, children are very safe and can be allowed their liberty. The trees are mainly fir, oak and chestnut and there is an abundance of wildlife in the valley including red deer, roe deer, wild boar, foxes, martins and badgers plus many species of butterfly and moth (some quite rare) kingfishers, heron, woodpeckers, owls, buzzards and kites, also a host of birds including finches, hoopo, golden oriels, nightingales. During the spring and early summer month’s wild flowers abound and within our own site there are numerous species of wild orchid. In the autumn mushrooms, cepes and if you are lucky the famous truffle (worth about £500 a kilo) can be found. CHILDREN ARE WELCOME and will enjoy meeting our menagerie of ducks, geese, ponies, Nell the Labrador and Thomas the cat. About us. We are a family of four, Jackie, Colin and two daughters, Sam and Stephani. We moved from England to the Dordogne in 1991 and live and work here permanently. A 12mt X 6mt (40 foot x 20 foot) terraced swimming pool has been installed away from the residential property and is sited so as take maximum advantage of the sun. It has a partly covered terrace to escape from the heat which can exceed 40C degrees in July / August and both the pool and terrace have illumination for evening swimming or barbecues. A very small friendly commune (about 800 residents) it is sleepy and quite for six months of the year but becomes very busy during the summer attracting visitors from all over the world. The capital of prehistory in the heart of the Perigord Noir it is an ideal base for people of all ages and interests. An archaeologists' paradise, having many caves, grottes and the National Prehistory museum. The cradle of prehistory, in a grandiose site of limestone cliffs, set in the valley of the river Vezere, the village of Eyzies lies under enormous massif rocks, halfway up of which are the remains of an imposing 10 c. chateau of the Barons of Beynac. It is the richest area for prehistoric archaeology in the whole of France. You should not miss a visit to caves which are unique, some having cave paintings and drawings from early man, others having the natural beauty of rock formations with stalagmites and stalactites. For the active there exists canoeing, swimming, fishing, horse riding, cycling, tennis. The commune boasts some 25 restaurants where you can have an excellent 4/5/6 course meal for as little as 7 € up to 50€, the price is indicative of the surroundings, not the quality or quantity of the food. There is a small “Intermarche” shop, three bakers, a butcher and a pharmacy, plus a number of varied gift shops. A Monday morning market exists and is worth a visit. The Surrounding Area. The whole of the Dordogne has an enormous wealth of natural beauty, impressive and varied architecture and is particularly noted for its rich and wholesome cuisine. France is generally is a very cultural country particularly with regard to the arts and classical music, no more so than in the Dordogne and during the season there are many exhibitions and musical evening entertainments to be enjoyed. There is much too much to detail but considerable information can be obtained from the tourist offices in either Les Eyzies or Le Bugue. Le Bugue is the nearest small town (about 6 miles) where most provisions can be obtained. There are two supermarkets, a general range of shops, two pharmacies and a traditional street market on Tuesday mornings. Additionally there is a very good medical centre that has three doctors (Dr Candau speaks very good English), two dentists and a physiotherapist. If your holiday includes either the 14 July or the last weekend of August you should visit the evening fireworks display held by the river, very impressive and completely free. A very quaint and old town who’s various picturesque quarters, with many 15?16c houses, merit a long visit. Its charm lies in its preservation of the past; it still feels like a small market town, the home of merchants and clerks during the Ancien Regime (period before the revolution), with narrow mediaeval streets, Gothic and renaissance hotels and the famous Saturday market where people are still seen bargaining over poultry, grain, walnuts, foie gras and truffles. The town has a good range of shops and several supermarkets. There are numerous restaurants, many of which have outside seating that at night have musical entertainments. Buskers roam the streets and there are several dedicated festivals. St Cyprien is well worth a Sunday morning visit when the shops are open and there is a traditional street market. Canoeing can be enjoyed on the safe rivers of the Vezere or Dordogne and can be hired for 2/3 hours or for a full days excursion. Life jackets and waterproof containers are included and you are normally taken by minibus up river to various sites and then left to leisurely paddle your way back to the starting point passing chateaux and sites of interest, maybe stopping part way for a well-deserved picnic. There are also several small aqua parks in the area that are not particularly expensive, some running evening entertainments
