About Scenery/Beauty Spots
What is there to see?
There are literally dozens of sights to see. Turkey is one large open museum with loads of historical sights and interesting places, many in close proximity to the apartment.
Here are a few examples: -
Fethiye - a fascinating place to visit, perfect combination of market town, fishing port and historical sights. It has a wide tree-lined promenade with cafes and restaurants where you can relax whilst looking out on to the colourful yacht marina where locals can be seen playing Back-Gammon. Behind the promenade are the cobbled streets of the market town packed with shops and bars. We recommended visiting the famous Lycian Rock Tombs, the grandest of which is the Tomb of Amyntas. From Calis it is a half hour walk along the front, or by boat or 10/15 minute ride in Taxi Dolmus.
Kaykoy – Kayaköy (Hidden Ghost Village) was a settlement region of Rums (Greeks of Turkish Nationality) in the 14th Century. Scenically stunning and historically fascinating, the Kaya Valley is one of the most beautiful and poignant sights in the whole of South-West Turkey. A few kilometres from Fethiye, it climbs past the ancient fortress and Rock Tomb of King Amyntas. Visitors can walk, cycle or even horse/camel-ride around the pathways and lanes of the valley. Check it out!
Hisaronu and Ovacik - Just 10 kilometres from Calis, high on a plateau, you will find Ovacik and Hisaronu. Once a sleepy mountain village, Hisaronu has been developed into a lively holiday resort. There are a great variety of restaurants serving all types of cuisine, and a host of up-tempo nightspots filling the streets of Hisaronu until the early hours.
Oludeniz – famous for the beach, it is a popular resort and has good bars and restaurants but can be quite busy. Oludeniz is one of Turkey’s most scenic coastal resorts and is the most photographed beach in Turkey. The long, wide stretch of white sand, pebble and shingle curves around the bay leading to the famous lagoon. The Blue Lagoon with its crystal clear waters is a conservation area. We recommend getting there early to get a good spot (daily entry charge is approximately 50p). Roughly is takes about 40 minutes to get there.
Pammukale - Translated as Cotton Castle around 200km from Fethiye, is one of the most interesting places in the world, justly famous not only for the entrancing beauty of its unique geological formations but also for its historical remains. The calcium oxide-rich waters flowing down the southern slope of Caldag located north of the ruins have, over the millennia, built up deposits of white travertine on the plateau thus fully justifying both the site’s ancient name of Hierapolis (Holy City) and its modern one of Pamukkale (Cotton Castle).
Saklikent Gorge * A must see! - 50km from Fethiye, this is a unique natural wonder hiding within an 18km long magnificent canyon reaching heights of up to 600 meters in some places. There is also an affordable restaurant over hanging the river, with hammocks and sofas to use. We also recommend Yakapark Trout Farm which is on the way. It has a fantastic restaurant and, if you are able to stay in the water for 5 minutes, you get a free meal (don’t hold us to that) but they told us this when we went there. * The water is very cold.
Tlos - At a distance of 45km from Fethiye, Tlos is one of the six big cities of the Lycian Federation. The sport centre of the Federation is also Tlos. It is known as the city where mythological hero Bellerophon and his winged flying horse Pegasus lived. Determined as the oldest city of Lycian Region by the archaeological excavations, Tlos dates back to the time before 2000 B.C. The graveyard on the natural rocks of the City Acropolis was filled with most elaborate house-type tombs of Lycia. It is known that the king-type tomb in the necropolis is dedicated to Bellerophon.
Kelebekler Valley (Butterfly Valley): At a distance of 5-7km from Ölüdeniz, this interesting canyon is surrounded by approximately 350 meter high mountains. It takes its name from the butterflies called ‘Jarsey Tiger’ which are seen between June and September. Transportation to the bay, is provided by boats from Ölüdeniz.
