Albergaria El-Rei Dom Manuel in Marvão (Alentejo) The village of Marvão is located in the “Nordeste Alentejano”, on the top of an 862m rocky formation in the heart of the S. Mamede Natural Park. Marvão is known as the “nest of Eagles, where we can see the backs of birds on fly”. From the top of the highest tower of the castle, we can witness the beauty of the landscape. The village of Marvão still maintains all the characteristics of a medieval borough. Its white washed houses and rocky hillsides, which form beautiful streets and paved alleys, are embraced by imposing walls. Inside the castle, Marvão has one of the largest cisterns of Europe. The pillory, the wrought iron balconies, the traditional “Alentejana” chimneys, characteristic windows, and the Convent of “Nossa Senhora da Estrela” (our saint of village) are also of great interest. If the village of Marvão is accepted as a World Monument, a new tourist triangle will emerge along with the existing one the North Alentejo (Portalegre, Castelo de Vide and Marvão). The S. Mamede Natural Park is a protected area where chestnut, holm, cork and pine trees have their important and spectacular presence, where on each November is a festival in honour of the chestnut trees. The varieties of exotic trees together with the gurgling of the rivers, give us a profound sense of peace. And to this natural landscape, we add the magnificent historical and archaeological past.
