About Beaches
To the left of and at the entrance to Kalkan harbour, Kalkan's white pebble beach is very popular with visitors and locals. The water is incredibly clear, and often calm, making it very good for swimming and snorkelling. Toilet and changing facilities are available just behind the beach, and sunbeds/umbrellas can be hired at a very reasonable rate. There are harbour front restaurants, shops and cafes all within 2 minutes walk of the beach. Kalkan beach enjoys late evening sun, and is a lovely place to watch the yachts and gulets returning back to harbour in the early evening. This beach is just around a 3 minute walk from our Kalkan Old Town accommodation. Read more about beaches on our website; http://www.theturquoisecollection.com/discover-kalkan/beaches-/
About Airport Information
Dalaman is the closest airport to Kalkan at approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes' drive. You can also fly into Antalya Airport, but the journey to Kalkan is longer at around 2 hours and 30 minutes. Dalaman airport, otherwise known as "Mugla Airport", is located 5km south of Dalaman on the south west coast of Turkey. Dalaman has 2 terminals; the modern international terminal which was opened in 2006 and a domestic terminal. If you had a connecting flight via Istanbul, you would fly into the domestic terminal at Dalaman. Non-stop flights from the UK will fly into the international terminal. Facilities at the airport include; 16 cafes/restaurants, Duty free, shops, a bank, 2 currency exchange facilities, a premium/business lounge, and Wi-Fi internet access. Amongst these many restaurants is Burger King, Pizza Hut and McDonalds. We recommend that on your return flight to the UK, you bring food with you as the prices at the cafes/restaurants are very high. There is a restriction on liquids contained in hand luggage, just as there is departing UK airports. Find out more on our website; http://www.theturquoisecollection.com/flights-/
About History
Ancient Lycia encompasses the area that runs from Ekincik to as far as Antalya, a semi-circle of some of the most mountainous and wild landscape to be encountered anywhere in Turkey. During the Ottoman period it was called 'Uc', the 'Frontier', a name that conjures up the nature of the landscape. It is a region hemmed in by mountains. On the west and east two high mountain ridges, the tallest peaks standing well over 3000 meters (10,000 feet) high, cut off Lycia from neighbouring Caria to the west and Pamphylia to the east. In the north a lower but no less rugged range and a great plateau cut Lycia off from central Anatolia. Around the coast a series of mountain ranges drop precipitously into the sea and though the peaks are not as high as those in the interior, the aspect from seaward is of an inhospitable coast. Right into early summer the highest peaks in Lycia, Akdag in the west and Bey Dagi (ancient Mt Solymnus) in the east, are covered in snow on the highest slopes.
