Black Bear Cottage in the Woods on the stream! United States

Prices from $975 per Week
Sleep to the Soothing Sounds of the Tumbling Stream. Secluded in a private mountain cove, Black Bear Cottage in the Woods is an escape to the bounty of nature. Deep in this old-growth forest, the stream tumbles past in a never-ending melody. It wraps around the back of the cottage, and the deck is cantilevered out over it. The wooded mountainside behind ensures your privacy, and your mountain view is to be had from the deck in the ivy garden. This hidden hideaway is only 1/2 a mile from Maggie Valley! But, like Brigadoon appearing from the mist, this magical spot can only be found if you know what you're looking for... Relax in the den, in big club chairs beside your gas fireplace. (Yes, it has a remote control for those of you who are lost without one!) Sip your coffee on the deck over the creek and watch the little waterfalls. Two bedrooms, each with its own jacuzzi bathtub-for-two, a kitchen, dining room and den comprise this little cottage. Each bedroom has its own entrance and its own deck. There's also a front porch (with rocking chairs, of course!) and a rear deck over the stream. Your own bridge across the stream leads only to the woods. And there's even a unique 'fishin hole' at the Black Bear Cottage in the Woods. Both bedrooms at Black Bear Cottage have unique personalities. The Woodland is very natural, and the Streamsong is more European. The Streamsong features french doors that open onto a private deck situated directly over the creek. The room is decorated with blue toile de juoy, and a queen size cherry sleigh bed, draped in lace. An antique mahogany vanity completes this blue & white confection. The nightstands are antique dresser top drawers, refitted and mounted to the walls. You'll find hardwood floors, beaded board ceilings, a ceiling fan, and a double-size jacuzzi bathtub set in stone and river rock. Our visitors who've stayed in The Streamsong are delighted to have the creek right underfoot - we've considered calling the deck 'the dock' instead. :) And yes, there are a few trout in that little brook. The Woodland is a charming room that pays homage to our setting in this beautiful old-growth forest. The decor is softly green, accented with leaves and small woodland creatures. The bed -a particular prize- is a handmade queen four poster, made of laurel branches. (This is not "twig" furniture, but rather a hefty piece of furniture made by a Todd Barrow of Mars Hill, NC, who was featured on HGTV's "Modern Masters." We are excited to have this piece.) The hand-stitched quilt in gentle hues of light browns and greens complements this forest room. Even the double-size jacuzzi bathtub is surrounded by copper and tan stonework, with a bas relief deer art tile. (You'll love the faucet -it's an old red pump!) This room also has a private deck in the ivy garden, just outside your window. The creek runs past about 20 feet from the deck. This deck is the *perfect* spot to watch the sun set behind the mountaintop. The rear deck, over the stream, is L-shaped. Tucked into the L is a spot we can curtain off into a striped cabana if you wish to arrange for a massage during your visit. (Getting a massage right there on the creek is a wonderful experience.) Of course, there are lots of other things to do in and around Maggie Valley besides getting a massage! For the shoppers, there are crafts (and craft shows!) antiques, local potters and woodworkers. If you're looking for scenery, you've found it! The Blue Ridge Parkway, The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Pisgah National Park and Cherokee National Park are all nearby. You can take a whole week to do nothing but waterfall hunting! Hiking trails abound, whitewater rafting and horseback riding, too. Even Harrah's Casino on the Cherokee reservation offers diversion. Nightlife includes Carolina Nights dinner theater, jazz at Saratoga's, the Maggie Valley Opry House (home of Raymond Fairchild and his banjo), and more. The Biltmore estate is half an hour away in nearby Asheville. The Great Smoky Mountains Railway and 6 golf courses are nearby as well. Our favorite restaurants include the Maggie Valley Restaurant (for great trout), some of the best barbeque around at Eddie's, and J. Arthur's for special occasions. Saratoga's is THE place to be on Wednesday nights, for Larry Moomey's jazz band. After it all, come home to Black Bear Cottage and kick off your shoes. Put your feet up. Relax to the soothing sounds of the tumbling stream. (Turn on the electric blanket and sleep with the windows open!) Amenities: Fireplace in living room. 2 Queen bedrooms. Whirlpool bathtubs-for-two in **both** bathrooms! Kitchen. Washer/Dryer. Fine linens, feather pillows, electric blankets. Front porch, side deck, rear deck cantilevered over the stream. Bridge over stream. Cable TV, CD players. Very private in old-growth forest. Secluded in a hidden cove at the upper end of Maggie Valley, your vacation home elevation is 3800 feet. Because of its location in old-growth forest and proximity to the creek, the temperature is milder than the lower valley and surrounding areas. (In the summertime, check Asheville temperatures, and subtract 10-15 degrees!) Please call or email to arrange for a "Spa Package" which includes a visit from a professional massage therapist, or for a "Picnic Breakfast Basket for Two" which is decidedly not a continental breakfast. Entrees vary and may be Baked Ham & Cheddar Omelets, or Venezuelan Tortillas, or Orange Creme Stuffed French Toast. All come with fresh fruit, juice, and there's always an abundant supply of coffee in the cottage. We have it flown in from Costa Rica! ..and no silly fees...
