Chalet in Berne, Switzerland

Property Details of Berne Chalet

La Taupiniere is located in the small Alpine village of Moléson sur Gruyères, set high amongst the summer grazing pastures for the cows producing the famous Gruyères cheese. The region is richly historical and spectacularly beautiful, sprinkled with idyllic towns and villages, each reflecting the character of its region. The chalet is situated in the canton of Fribourg, which is in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, about 130km from Geneva. ABOUT THE HOUSE Our traditional, wooden, detached chalet, built in the local architectural style, is the ideal base for your holiday in Switzerland and offers an atmosphere of relaxation and plenty of opportunity for recreation. The chalet is on two storeys and, as is usual for chalets, the bedrooms are on the lower floor and the living area on the upper floor. However, due to the chalet being built on a hill-side the entrance is on the upper floor. On the upper floor has an open plan sitting and dining area leading onto a large balcony. The large fireplace provides a focal point for the sitting room, which is well furnished with large, comfortable sofas and a chair. There is a CD player, and a trunk full of games and puzzles, and plenty of books and magazines. The kitchen also has patio doors to the balcony and a serving area to the dining area. The kitchen is fitted with a dishwasher, spacious fridge freezer, built-in oven and hob and is fully equipped with everything you will need for a self catering holiday. Also on this level is a single bedroom, with a wardrobe and wash basin. This proves ideal for anyone unable to or not wishing to climb the stairs very often. There is also a separate toilet. Stairs lead to the lower floor which has two double bedrooms and one twin bedroom. Each room has a wardrobe and storage space. The larger double room has French windows leading onto the patio. The other double room has a door to the indoor swimming pool. There is also a separate WC and bathroom with a twin basin and bath, with a shower attachment. The pool room is reached from the lower floor. The heated pool is 9 x 3.6 metres and has an even depth of 1.5m, with ladder steps into the pool, and underwater lighting. The water is automatically heated, filtered and cleaned using an ultra-violet light system, fortunately meaning very little chlorine is needed. There is a pool-side sitting area and a large shower unit. Next to this, through the laundry room (with washing machine and tumble dryer) is the large three bedded sauna. The 'studio', with its own separate entrance, has two sets of full size bunk-beds and an en-suite washroom with WC. There is also a chest of drawers and a hi-fi. It is ideal for older children who want a little independence from parents or vice versa! The chalet and garden offer glorious views of the surrounding valley and mountains and is a wonderfully restful place. The private garden is bordered by trees and shrubs and there is a large patio with a table and benches for al fresco eating in summer and it is ideal for barbecues and sunbathing. La Taupiniere is level to the quiet cul-de-sac road and has a parking area for two cars.

Local Area Details

There is plenty to do within an hour's drive of the chalet, more than enough to keep you amused for the duration of your stay.

In the valley below Moléson lies the pretty, ancient, hill-top town of Gruyères. Encompassed by an outstanding chateau and ramparts, it boasts some very pleasant restaurants and boutiques.

About 10km away is Bulle, also with a chateau at its centre, providing all the normal amenities of a small Swiss town, together with a folk museum, art gallery and a local market on Thursday mornings.

To the east the Jaun Pass, the most mountainous in the Fribourg Alps, leads to the Jungfrau and Interlaken regions in the Bernese Oberland. To the south east lies Gstaad and Chateau d'Oex, favoured by the rich jet-set, and good for skiing, walking, or taking in the beautiful scenery. Bordering Lake Geneva are the towns of Vevey, home to Charlie Chaplin, Montreux, famous for the jazz and film festivals, Lausanne and Geneva.

To the north are the ancient towns of Fribourg, Murten, Basle, and the Swiss capital, Berne.

In winter the area is ideal for both downhill and cross country skiing. The beginner or nursery slopes are within sight of the chalet, some 500m away. The main lift is a funicular railway and is just a further hundred metres. The skiing area is from 1100m to 2000m and there are a variety of lifts from T-bars, buttons and a large cable car. The pistes cater for all standards of skier from green to black runs, but with the majority being blue and red.

The village is well served for winter sports, including snow-shoeing, paragliding, snow boarding, and has a ski school which teaches all of these. Within a hours drive of Moléson you will be able to ski the world class resorts of Verbier, Villars, Mürren, Wengen, the White Highlands, Gstaad, Les Diablerets and Leysin, as well as many smaller, quieter ski areas such as Charmey, Les Paccots, Zweissamen, Jaunpass and Saanen.

In summer the area is renowned for its splendid walking paths, including a botanical walk especially marked for rare plants and a cheese route, visiting many of the cheese producing farms. The main lifts and the two mountain restaurants, one with an excellent observatory, are open from mid June to mid October for those of preferring to take things a little easier.

The interspersed farms surrounding the chalet make Gruyères, Vacherin and Serac cheeses in cauldrons over open wood fires. The old farm in the heart of the village is now a traditional cheese making centre. It opens from May to October and also has displays of local interest.

Summer sporting activities are also well supplied. In the village are floodlit tennis courts, a mini-golf course, a childrens' play area, archery lessons, petanque, a bob-luge and grass scooters.

Trout fishing, windsurfing and pony trekking are also available locally. For the more adventurous there is rock climbing, rafting, canyoning, paragliding and other extreme sports. Further information is available from the tourist office in the square. Here you'll also find a well stocked grocery shop, a restaurant-cafe, pizzeria, a ski shop and an art gallery.
