Arles Bed Breakfast New Zealand

Prices from $120 per Night
Built in the mid-1880s and renovated in the Edwardiwn style around 1907, Arles offers a warm welcome, comfortable beds, spacious rooms and cosy central heating in the cooler months. Bedrooms have tea/coffee facilities, hair dryers, electric blankets, fresh flowers and toiletries. There are two ensuite rooms, one with a queen-size bed and the other a king-size bed and private balcony. The 2-bedroom suit has a double bed, 2 singles and a cot is available. This suite has a private bathroom with shower over claw-foot bath. Robes are supplied. The rimu-panelled lounge is cosy in the winter with the woodburner fire - just the place to relax with a complimentary wine or sherry and a book from the large library. In the warmer months a swim in the pool or forty winks on the wide verandah or under one of the many old established trees in the garden may suit. A guest kitchen/laundry in the homestead and barbecue outside gives guests the choice of self-catering lunch/dinner or dining at one of the many restaurants just minutes away. The swimming pool was one of the first private concrete pools in the area and was dug out by hand by a group of school boys in the early 1950s. It has just been refurbished for the 2004 season. The garden has many native and exotic trees including the southern-most Queensland kauri. Native birds include tui, kereru or wood pigeon, and fantails. The Arles garden provides food for the birds from plum, cherry laurel, lilly pilly, and karaka berries and nectar from the kowhai and flax.

About Weather/Climate/Temperature

Wanganui enjoys a temperate climate. It was known to have the fourth most temperate climate in the world! Arles is very sheltered from the prevailing westerly winds and is generally 2 degrees warmer than in the city.

About Beaches

The west coast beaches are 'wild beaches' - black sand, lots of driftwood. The water temperature is slightly warmer than that of the east coast but people should take care when swimming to stay on a patrolled beach.
The beach is wonderful for walking along especially at the end of the day to view the sunset.

About Golfing

Wanganui has three golf course - one 9-hole and two top-class 18 hole. They are within 10km of the city centre.

About Scenery/Beauty Spots

Wanganui has many parks from sportsgrounds to playgrounds. The children's favourite is Kowhai Park which is a good old-fashioned playground complete with Tot-Town Train ride, a pirate ship and castle, a dinosaur slide and octopus swing. All ages enjoy the beauty of Bason Botanical Reserve a few minutes out of town. It is a favourite place for picnics in the summer months and has spectacular gardens throughout the year with specialty plantings.

About Shopping

Although Wanganui is a reasonably small city it has many interesting specialty shops. Antique and second-hand shops feature as do art galleries and craft shops.
