Local Area Details

Mandelieu-La Napoule is ideally situated on the Mediterranean Coast in the Department of Alpes-Maritimes. As its hyphenated name suggests, Mandelieu-La Napoule is a place comprised of two small towns - the seaside resort (and harbour) of La Napoule and the older inland town of Mandelieu. Both are located 10 minutes drive west of Cannes and therefore can be considered satellite towns of Cannes. This idyllic location faces the Lerin Islands in the Golfe de la Napoule and is bordered by the Maritime Alps towards the East and the Massif de l'Esterel and the Massif du Tanneron towards the west in the Department of Var. Every February, Mandelieu plays host to the famous Mimosa Festival when the landscape is alive with vibrant yellow flowers.

In the 19th century, the European aristocracy charmed by the idea of living in this enchanted setting, constructed the first 18 and 9 hole golf courses. These were followed 100 years later by the construction of another golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones and by the establishment of a David Ledbetter golf academy. Golf is a big attraction in Mandelieu.

Mandelieu-La Napoule is also a much favoured destination for yachting enthusiasts and water sports amateurs. Cannes Marina is actually in Mandelieu at the mouth of the Siagne river, and the other marinas at Port la Napoule make Mandelieu-La Napoule the biggest sailing harbour of Cote d'Azur with over 5000 moorings. The area meets the needs of a wide range of water sports professionals who come each year to enjoy sailing, diving, rowing, water skiing, jet skiing and tuna fishing. Parachuting is also a popular activity. For the less energetic, there are many beaches of fine sand on which to soak up the sun, and the blue Mediterranean Sea in which to cool off.

Other pursuits such as horseback riding, mountain biking, tennis and hiking are also available. There is an amusement park for the children. All year round, various festivals, exhibitions and concerts are staged in the area. The Cannes Film Festival takes place in May. Art lovers may wish to visit the Chateau de la Napoule Art Foundation to see the eccentric work of American sculptor Henry Clews.

Golf, tennis, riding, hillside walks, watersports, beaches, shops and excellent marina restaurants are all within 5 minutes drive. This is an ideal base for visiting St. Raphael, Frejus, St. Maxime, St. Tropez to the West and Antibes, Nice, Monaco and Italy to the East, and for exploring the Côte d'Azur and inland Provence. The A8 autoroute is 5 minutes drive, Cannes 10 minutes and Nice airport 30 minutes.
