Local Area DetailsThere is so much to see and do in this area that we can only touch on a few things.
The Coastline: The Bay of Mont St Michel, in which we are located and the seaport of Cancale is famous for oysters and mussels and superb seafood restaurants all along the coastline of the bay. The beaches both to the east in Normandy towards Granville and to the west of Cancale are truly wonderful. Large busy ones with beach guards, beach huts and refreshments and small secluded isolated ones, all with sandy beaches. There is a coastal path extending for many kilometres offering magnificent views. Driving time to the nearest beach along the coast is approximately 20 minutes. Other beaches are a little further.
Le Mont Saint Michel: This is the most visited place in France and should not be missed! Steep, narrow cobbled streets lead up to the impressive abbey standing at the top, which was begun in 996. The Mont is set in the bay itself and the area is renowned for phenomenally high tides.
Towns: The medieval town of Combourg with it's château dominating the old town and the lake is only 15 minutes drive and has a big street market on a Monday.
Dol-de-Bretagne is a 15 minutes drive and another delightful medieval town with a street market on a Saturday. Fougères and Dinan are also medieval towns complete with ramparts and chateaux and very interesting delightful towns to visit. Dinan is set high up overlooking the river Rance and the Port of Dinan, where boats and canoes can be hired, or a riverboat trip can be taken all the way down to Dinard and St. Malo on the coast.
Dinard and St Malo are two very different towns on either side of the estuary of the river Rance. Dinard is a very elegant resort with superb beaches and coastal walks, with delightful shops, restaurants and a casino. St Malo a bustling, exciting town inside it's massive ramparts with interesting narrow cobbled streets, abounding with shops and restaurants; there is always something going on there. Outside the ramparts are the busy seaport, beaches and superb views across the estuary.
Whilst here, why not fit in a day trip to Jersey or Guernsey, the ferries run regularly to the islands from St Malo.
There are various amusement parks, chateaux, zoological parks, gardens and the grand aquarium at St. Malo, plus many other attractions to be visited, as well as facilities for cycling, riding, fishing, or Go Karting.
There are some excellent golf courses at Golf des Ormes and the St Malo Golf Club at Le Tronchet, both only 20 minutes drive away. There is also a Links Course near Dinard.
Both Brittany and Normandy are two of the most colourful regions in France. The countryside and the coastline are very scenic, and local traditions that go back for many generations are still a part of every day life. Breton costumes are proudly worn on many occasions, at festivals, pardons and other local celebrations and are a delight to see. The Celtic influence in Brittany is reflected in many ways but especially in the music. The gastronomy is dominated by the vast selection of local fresh seafood; particularly oysters and mussels, locally produced crepes, galettes, cheeses, delicious biscuits and a lovely fresh array of local vegetables in the markets. Also to be experienced is the locally produced cider and calvados.
