Local Area Details

The Village

The picturesque listed Village of St. Nicolas des Eaux with its family restaurants, bars, a creperie and a village shop are all a leisurely stroll away. To walk along the river to collect bread for breakfast each morning is a delight.

The swimming pool is the centre of everything with an outside bar, children’s play area and ‘boules court’ all within well tended gardens beside the River Blavet. The river is wide, slow moving and navigable and there are many activities to enjoy including fishing, canoeing, pedalos or boat trips through the locks to see the famous St. Gildas Chapel

Bicycles are available for hire to tour further afield, perhaps cycle along the tow path to a riverside bar. The lovely thing is you don’t have to take the car every time you go out as the village abounds in activities for all age groups.

Historical Pontivy is just a short ride along the towpath through beautiful French countryside. The surrounding area is ideal for cycling and walking and the rest of Brittany is easily accessible . The wildlife is prolific and otters, dragon flies, butterflies, many species of birds including king fishers and herons are amongst the varieties found here. All this and more can be seen in the area around St. Nicolas des Eaux.

The swimming pool is the highlight of the area and is in the gardens of The Hotel de la Vallée and shared by the locals as well as our guests. The children will love it and there is always lots of activity for them to enjoy and mix with the people of the village. It is just next door to La Maison Magique Talk to Paul Duke who will look after you while you are here.

This holiday letting is a first class base for walking, fishing, canoeing etc.

Where to Go:
Brittany is one of France's favourite holiday destinations with 600 kilometres of coastline providing sheltered sandy bays, little harbours, dramatic rugged cliffs, islands and pretty estuaries. Inland, gentle wooded hills and rivers offer excellent walking and fishing, with lovely old towns steeped in history to explore. Summer sees colourful festivals full of Breton culture.

Where can we visit?
The lovely towns of Quimper, St Malo, Vannes, medieval Dinan and Concarneau's citadel. The standing stones of Carnac and the islands of the Gulf of Morbihan.

What can we do?
Sailing, windsurfing and many other watersports. Boat trips, fishing, golf and horse riding. And don't forget shopping for pottery, herbal cosmetics and striped sweaters.

And what about the kids?
When not enjoying the fabulous beaches try taking them to Brest's vast Océanopolis exhibition, or the aquariums at Vannes and St Malo. The Branféré wildlife park at Muzillac also makes an excellent day out for the family.

Getting There
You are only an hour from the Port of St. Malo and Dinard Airport and the roads in Brittany are very good. Look for Vannes on a reasonable scale map (try www.maporama.com) then find Pontivy and Baud lying to the North on the N24. St Nicolas is in the comune of Plumeliau between the two. I find it best when coming from the ferries to travel to Baud on the N24 and come back to St Nicolas on the D768.

Ferries depart from Plymouth, Poole and Portsmouth and arrive at Rostock, Cherbourg and St Malo, or perhaps take the Condor ferry to Jersey and get the ferry from there.
